What Is A Shadowhunter?
Shadowhunters are Nephilim, a unique race of appointed warriors on earth by the Angel Raziel. We are appointed specifically to control and preside over the demonic energies in our world. Both demon and supernatural creatures born of there presence among us. A thousand years ago Raziel bestowed on us the tools we need to accomplish this task. We take our job very seriously with a full understanding of the risks invovled.
What are the tools?
1. The Mortal Instruments: by which we may know the truth, speak to angels and make more of our own.
2. The Country of Idris: in which we may live safely away from both demons and the mundane world.
3. The Book of Raziel: or the (Gray Book) in which we may make use of the magic of angels to protect and augemnt ourselves.
Therse were gifts by Raziel to the first Nephilim, Jonathan Shadowhunter, and so after him we call ourselves Shadowhunters.
There have been many versions of our oath that is spoken by new Nephilim when they drink from the Mortal Cup and join our ranks. The newest version in current use was created a little more than a hundred years ago, which was part of the reforms that swept through the Shadow World arend that point in time. The oath follows: you should commit it to memory at the time you are made a Shadowhunter because you will need to be able to recite it without prompting.
The Oath
I hearby swear:
I will be Raziel's Sword, extending my arms to stirke down evil
I will be Raziel's Cup, offering my blood to our mission
I will be Raziel's Mirrors; when my enemies behold me, let them see his face in mine
I Hearby Promise:
I will serve with the Angel's courage
I will serve the Angel's justice
And I will serve with the Angel's mercy
Until such time as I shall die, I will be Nephilim. I pledge myself in Covenant as a Nephilim
And I pledge my life and my family to the Clave of Idris.
